When it comes to instant cameras there only used to be one camera in the game, Polaroid. They were those big chunky metal cameras which produced ‘instant’ prints that you had to shake to see. Remember the song ‘shake it like a Polaroid picture?’
These days Fuji are making the ‘new’ Polaroid and they call them Instax.
Instax cameras come in many different types, from the most basic point and shoot cameras to the more expensive retro looking ones.
This guide will take you through the current models, available film and major accessories. I hope to explain some of them to you to give you an understanding of what you should expect from each model. I’ll start with the most popular one:
Uses Fujifilm Instax Mini Instant Film
The Instax Mini 8 is a fashion icon in many ways. The demanding pastel colours really reflect the target market of this camera. It’s one that’s best carried around to match an outfit or better still you may find the Instax Mini 8 at home taking selfies with your bff or it could be on a big night out. Whatever the case maybe its a given you will always need more film.
The camera takes Instax Mini film, which comes in small packs of 10, 20 or 50. You only can fit 10 shots in the camera at one time so you’ll definitely master the art of loading film into this little pocket rocket. I’ll cover the film a little bit later in this in-depth article, but for now let me talk about some of the features the camera has and why you need them
With a press of the shutter button the camera will instantly take a picture, using the flash every time. The camera holds 10 sheets of film in one cartridge before you need to load a new film cartridge so be sure you have some extra film on hand.
All you have to do is open up the back of the camera and align the two coloured lines. One on the lines is located on the back of the camera and the other on the back of the film. Once the film is sitting flush with the back of the camera close the back door of the camera and proceed to take a photo. The first sheet which emerges from the top of the camera is a backing card. Once out discard this and proceed to take photos.
You don’t have to worry about lighting with the Instax Mini 8 camera. The flash will automatically fire every time.
This mode is great for taking pictures with a softer impression. You can really get some great effects in low light situations.
The Instax Mini 25 is a camera full of fun. The camera’s a perfect candidate for travelling due to its small and lightweight design. The Instax Mini 25 also features two shutter buttons, one located on the tip of the camera and the other in a perfect position for capturing selfies. You would choose this camera over the Instax Mini 8 if you want a smaller camera without the bright camera colour.

Now if you’re after style the Instax 50s is the Zoolander of instant. Featuring either a stylish black or white piano finish, this camera oozes class with a modern twist. This camera boasts some cool tech, like a flash that will automatically adjust itself to the surrounding lighting conditions, so you get the perfect shot every time. The self timer mode is also a winner because it allows you to capture two photos with one press of the shutter button so all you have to do is practice your duck face for the ultimate selfie capture.

Alright so now we’re getting to the higher end of the market. The Instax Mini Neo 90 is everything you want a camera to be. Ultra retro, stylish, small, cute and any other gen Y word you can think of. If your after head turns when you pull out your camera then get this one, it’s a guaranteed conversation starter.
Like all of the other Instax mini camera range this one takes the same mini film, however there is a difference when it comes to the battery found in the camera. Instead of using disposable batteries, the Instax Mini Neo 90 uses a much more powerful rechargeable battery, sort of like your mobile phone battery. The great thing is you don’t always have to spend extra money buying expensive CR2 batteries whenever it goes flat, simply give it a charge and your good to go!
Featuring four easy to use modes, Party, Kids, Landscape and Macro (close up) you’re bound to have fun with this camera no matter what life event you’re at.
You will also be able to have control over the brightness of the photo to ensure you capture that ‘high key’ look, but it doesn’t stop there, the Instax Mini Neo 90 also has some more advanced modes. Modes like, bulb exposure, where you can keep the camera’s shutter open to create some really cool arty motion effects or double exposure mode which superimposes a photo on top of another one. The effect is really cool!

The Instax 210 Wide camera is the big brother of the mini range. It’s film size is actually twice as wide as the Instax Mini film. The extra width of the film allows you to write messages (see the accessories section below for a list of pens) on the bottom, ensuring you really do capture that moment with a tagged headline or written memory.
The camera also features an automatic flash which takes all of the hassle out of capturing the correct exposure. However if you did want to adjust the brightness of the photo you can also do that by using the lighten and darken controls on the back of the camera before you take a photo.
