Adobe Goes Subscription-Only In It’s Rebranded Creative Suite

Adobe recently announced at it’s Adobe MAX creativity conference in Los Angeles that it’s next generation of the Creative Suite will be rebranded to the Creative Cloud and will be 100% subscription only. The subscription model has worked great for Adobe so far, netting the company $224.3 million in the last quarter, according to Reuters, prompting the company to raise it’s full year forecasts.

Adobe have stated that they will continue to support their existing Creative Suite 6 products, but that they have no plans to release further products under the Creative Suite brand. For creatives that rely on the company’s upgrade paths, some will be pleased to find that anyone with a CS 3 or later serial number will get their first Creative Cloud year for $29.99 per month. For everyone else, the complete version of Creative Cloud will set you back $49.99 per month, or you can purchase a single subscription for $19.99 per month. Teachers and Students will still get the education discount and will be able to subscribe for $29.99 per month.

This is a move by Adobe to combat their huge piracy problem and should make the product suite more affordable for many small businesses. This move will also stabilise the company’s revenue, rather than huge bursts of income every 2 years when they release a new version. Hopefully Adobe will be able to reduce the amount of money they are currently investing in DRM software to try to curb the piracy of their products.

There has been a large backlash already against the move, one of the main factors being the lack of security in such a system. There are no guarantees stopping Adobe from jacking the price up a year from now, once everyone is on the subscription model. Adobe’s Creative Cloud kicks off in June 2013.

This seems to be a reasonable and fairly natural progression for the company and should actually benefit most of it’s customer base which is made up of both professionals and prosumers.
