Nikon have just announced the arrival of the world’s first waterproof interchangeable lens camera. The 14 Megapixel Nikon AW1 can be taken to an amazing depth of 15 metres and also has the benefit of being shockproof to 2 metres. Perfect kids camera?

The new Nikon AW1 contains a 1″ CMOS sensor so I imagine the image quality will be alright, although it is early days. You have to remember any lens you put on the Nikon AW1 will be multiplied by 2.7× whereas a ‘standard’ APS-C sensor is 1.5x and a micro four thirds is 2x. Nikon have factored in this crop factor by kitting the camera with a Nikkor waterproof (AW) 11-27.5mm f3.5-5.6 lens and have also given you the option to have a second waterproof 10mm f2.8 lens.

The lens focus system is enhanced by the announcement of phase detection pixels which should assist in a fast focus system – lets hope all the fish out there shouldn’t have to slow down! I envisage this camera will be popular with the beach enthusiast or snorkelling fanatic, but what do I know…I don’t venture to the beach to swim only to take photos.

Photographers will also be able to document their watery shoots with the added bonus of GPS, which sports a compass and altimeter/depth meter. On another note, the spec that stands out the most for me aside from the water/shock proofing is the extremely fast shutter speed – 1/16000 sec! That’s fast! Most professional camera only have a maximum of 1/8000 of a second so hopefully we should see some great images because of this.

I really can’t believe this product exists in an interchangeable lens camera it seems to good to be true.

Lets hope owners are smart enough to know not to change their lenses underwater!

Until Next Time – Happy Shooting!
